STRATEGIC BUSINESS AREAS OF SCHMIEDETECHNIK PLETTENBERG

STP specialises in three strategic business areas and provides its customers not only with forged parts but also with ready-machined high-precision components. We are able to offer our customers a perfect cost-effectiveness ratio through a high level of automation in the production chain. In the future we will continue to feed focused investments into these business areas in order to further enhance and expand them..

Both weight optimisation and component strength are able to be achieved in accordance with customer requirements due to the influence on material developments. Further stabilizing influences are possible due to economical heat treatment processes.

GEARS

The transmission of extreme torque values is enabled through gear components in all currently common gear arrangements such as manual, dual-clutch, automatic and CVT gearboxes. We offer complete solutions for all current gearbox components with our automatic forming facilities and subsequent metal cutting where necessary.

STP has demonstrated innovation and creativity in the selection of appropriate materials in conjunction with efficient processes for hot and cold forming in the achievement of minimal component dimensions while at the same time enduring increasingly high possible loads.

EXAMPLES FROM THE “GEAR” AREA

Output gears (1), CVT continuously variable gears (2), front axle and side shafts (3):

  • Manufacturing on multistage presses
  • Combined warm and cold calibration
  • Machining of raw parts including deep-hole drilling, broaching, profile rolling

RING ROLLING

Well-known automotive and gearbox manufacturers place demands on our skills and in particular require constantly new developments in the highly stressed circular gear components. STP is able to satisfy these demands through permanent ongoing development of the materials and ring rolling technology which it uses.

The ring rolling technology enables economical production of such products as ring gears for planetary gear trains and crown gears for bevel gear units. Through the use of one of the most modern ring rolling lines, forging is combined with inline ring rolling technology and heat treatment in such a way that components emerge with a functionally optimised fibre flow and grain structure. We are able to supply ready-to-use components as a result of subsequent machining of the raw parts.

EXAMPLES FROM THE “RING ROLLING” AREA

Crown gears (1), inner/outer races for the bearing industry (2), ring gears (3):

  • Automated forging/ring rolling line
  • Heat treatment immediately from the forming heat
  • Optimised component characteristics from the forming process
  • Machining of the raw parts

ENGINE

Well-known automotive and commercial vehicle manufacturers place demands on our skills and in particular require constantly new developments in the highly stressed engine components, the connecting rods. STP is able to satisfy these demands through involvement in and the initiation of developments of high-strength and fracture splitting materials.

Component simulation, FE calculation and fatigue strength tests are able to be carried out as part of the development process. The trend in connecting rod development is towards weight-optimised components at maximum load. STP already manufactures machined piston rods in a weight range from 0.5 to 12 kg with extremely tight weight tolerances.

EXAMPLES FROM THE “ENGINE” AREA

Car, truck and motorbike connecting rods (1),
fracture-splitting connecting rods (2),
production monitoring and final inspection (3):

  • Precision-forged parts
  • Tight weight tolerances
  • Production on automated forging lines
  • Heat treatment immediately from the forming heat
  • Automated final machining for highest safety demands
  • Production skills gained from > 10 million pistons annually

NON-DRIVETRAIN

Consistently lightweight construction for the increasing of payloads and saving of expensive re-working are the driving factors for STP to pursue the ongoing development of production processes from forging to machining.

Complex, forged and machined components and pre-assembled component groups may be found in the various forms of transmission and chassis designs in the automotive industry. Optimised geometrical forms in conjunction with the latest developments in materials lead to significant weight advantages, the smallest possible installation spaces and minimised machining dimensions.

EXAMPLES FROM THE “FURTHER PRODUCTS” AREA

Forged brake arm (1), brake arm component group (2), universal joint yokes (3):

  • Precision-forged parts
  • Automated forging lines
  • Heat treatment immediately from the forming heat
  • Machining of raw parts
  • Fitting of component groups
